Long ago, the land was empty. All the plants and animals lived in the
water.They looked like tiny blobs of jelly.
The first plants
Many hundreds of millions of years ago, the world was a scary place!
Fiery volcanoes boomed and rumbled. The sky was filled with black ash.
There was nothing but huge, gray ocean and bare, rocky land. There was
no living thing anywhere on the land—not one plant or animal of any
kind!
But in the seas there were millions of living creatures. They were so
tiny you couldn’t have seen them without a microscope. They looked like
drops of jelly filled with bubbles.
Many of these tiny creatures were green. They were plants—the first
plants in the world.
