Settling down to sleep
By the end of summer the plants have done their work. They have made
their seeds and sent them out to find new growing places.
For many plants, life is now over. But the trees and other plants that
have longer lives are getting ready for winter. They have dropped all
their leaves. The ground is growing cold and hard. Soon there will be no
water for roots to find. Once again they must sleep until spring
arrives.
The animals, too, are getting ready for winter. Many of the birds and
insects have flown away to warmer places. Many of the animals that have
stayed behind have already gone to sleep.
The green earth is turning brown. In a few weeks, snowflakes will come
spinning out of the sky. The land will turn white.
It is the flowers’ nighttime . . .
