WHAT A CASTLE REALLY WAS LIKE
All kinds of king\’s and all kinds of lords built all kinds of castles
in Europe long before the United States became a country.
Many castles are no more. Others have fallen apart and stand in ruins.
But Bunratty Castle near Shannon Airport in County Clare, Ireland, has
been rebuilt. It looks the way it did when it was first built. We call
it a restoration.
Restoring a castle takes a lot of time and money. A man named Lord Gort
restored the castle inside and out with the help of the Irish
government. Workers replaced bricks and stones, cleaned walls and
floors, and found furniture and paintings like the ones used in the
castle when it was first built.
Bunratty Castle is now an Irish national monument. Many tourists visit
it to see what a castle really was like a long time ago.
At Bunratty Castle in Ireland, people dress in costumes and serve meals
as they did long ago.
