Plymouth Rock
THE NOTHING ROCK
If some rocks could talk, what stories you could hear! For instance, one
famous rock lay on a barren beach for hundreds of years. Nobody paid any
attention to it, not even the birds. It was a nothing.
Then one day a speck appeared far out in the ocean. It grew larger and
taller. It drew closer and closer. It was a sailing ship.
When the people on the sailing ship came ashore, they stepped on the
face of the nothing rock. If rocks could speak, this rock would have
shouted for joy. At last somebody was paying attention to it. The people
didn\’t realize that they were making the rock famous!
That sailing ship was named the Mayflower. It brought pilgrims to
America from England more than three hundred vears ago.
The Pilgrims called the land where they settled Plymouth. Today, people
visit Plymouth in Massachusetts to see Plymouth Rock. But they can’t
step on the rock. It’s protected under a stone canopy on the seashore.
