THE DISAPPEARING TOE AT SAINT PETER S

The huge dome of Saint Peter’s Church in Vatican City looks like
this when you look up at it from inside.

THE DISAPPEARING TOE AT SAINT PETER S

Your big toe might wear away, too, if people kissed it every day for
years and years and years.

That’s what has happened to the big toe of a bronze statue of Saint
Peter. The statue sits on a throne in a famous church called Saint
Peter’s Church in Vatican City, Italy. Many people visit Saint Peter’s
every year, and thousands of people have leaned down to kiss or touch
the foot of the statue in memory of the great saint. So many kisses have
made its toe wear away.

Many people say that the tomb of Saint Peter rests under the main altar
of Saint Peter’s Church. Crowning the tomb, high above the altar, is a
famous dome, or roof, that seems to rise toward the sky.

After you enter the church, you can see the statue of Saint Peter with
its worn-away toe.

This is the bronze statue with the disappearing toe.
