STAY ON THE HORSE
Horses have been so important to people that sometimes when a sculptor
makes a statue of a person, the sculptor includes a horse. This kind of
statue is called an equestrian statue. The word “equestrian means “on
horseback.
One of the oldest equestrian statues is of the Roman Emperor Marcus
Aurelius. It stands near the Capitol in Rome, Italy.
Another equestrian statue you can see is the one of Joan of Arc in the
Place du Martroi in Orleans, France. Joan rode a horse when she led the
French army to victory.
Richard the Lion-Hearted
You can see still another equestrian statue in London, England. It is of
Richard I, called the Lion-Hearted, and it stands in front of the Houses
of Parliament.
And in Lima, Peru, you can see an equestrian statue of Francisco
Pizarro, the Spanish conqueror.
