REMEMBER THE ALAMO
“Victory or death—I shall never surrender or retreat. Those were the
words of Colonel Travis, who defended the Alamo with about one hundred
fifty soldiers of the Texas Army.
The colonel and his men were trapped inside the Alamo, a mission they
were using as a fort. Santa Anna, the Mexican leader, waited outside
with more than five thousand soldiers. He knew that the Texans did not
have many supplies. Colonel Travis sent messengers for help, but no help
came. Still he would not give up. Finally, Santa Anna ordered his men to
charge. They killed every soldier in the Alamo. Men such as Davy
Crockett and Jim Bowie fought so bravely that even their enemies told
stories of their courage. “Remember the Alamo’ became a cry that
inspired soldiers in other battles.
