LAKE IN A CRATER

LAKE IN A CRATER

Crater Lake in Oregon is so big it looks like a bathtub for a giant. The
clear, blue water fills the crater of a volcano named Mount Mazama.
Scientists say that Mount Mazama exploded thousands of years ago,
sending rivers of lava gushing out of its top. Then it was quiet for
years, until it finally trembled, cracked, and the edges of the crater
fell into the big hole at the top. That’s why some people say that Mount
Mazama swallowed itself. Water collected in the crater to form Crater
Lake.

Today, the lake area in Oregon is known as Crater Lake National Park.
Visitors often stay in nearby Rim Village. They can drive their cars on
a highway that runs around the rim of the lake.
