A visitor to Flinders Chase, a national wildlife reserve on Kangaroo
Island, feeds some small kangaroos.
KANGAROO ISLAND
If you want to see a live kangaroo, the place to go is your local zoo.
That is what most children would do in most parts of the world—even in
Australia, where kangaroos run wild and free in the open country. But
there is only one place in the world where you can see kangaroos on an
island that is named after them. The island was named by Captain Matthew
Flinders, who was exploring the Indian Ocean when he discovered the
place jumping with kangaroos. That’s why he called it Kangaroo Island.
Kangaroos use their hind legs for resting and jumping.
