HORSES ON THE ROOF
If you had lived a few thousand years ago, you could have taken a ride
in a four-horse chariot like the one on top of this building.
The building was the famous gold and marble tomb of a king named
Mausolus. It may be that Mausolus and his queen were the people riding
in the chariot.
When the king died, his queen ordered a tomb for him that would be known
and admired all over the world. The name Mausolus lives today in our
language in the word “mausoleum.” A mausoleum is the name we use for a
burial tomb above the ground.
The tomb of Mausolus was built in an ancient city called Halicarnassus
which is now the city of Bodrum in Turkey. The tomb was destroyed. But
you can see part of the chariot group that was saved, if you visit the
British Museum in London, England.
