HIGHWAY OF ALL THE AMERICAS

HIGHWAY OF ALL THE AMERICAS

With all its roads, the Pan American Highway system is longer than the
distance around the middle of the earth. The letters \”pan before a word
mean “all,’ so “Pan American Highway means “highway of all the Americas.
It links North America, Central America, and South America.

At the north end, the Pan American Highway starts at four different
places along the border of the United States and Mexico. From there, it
goes through Mexico and Central America all the way to Chile and nine
other countries in South America. But there is one area of heavy jungle
in Panama, called the Darien Gap, where the road has not been built.
People usually put their cars on a ship to go around this part.
