HAIR FOR HONEY
Once, there lived a man who was a great teacher and doctor. People
thought that he was so wise that they gave him the title Buddha, which
means “The Enlightened One.
It is said that two brothers named Poo and Taupau visited Buddha and
gave him a gift of honey. Then, they asked Buddha to give them some
little thing, in the same way you might ask someone for an autograph.
Buddha plucked eight hairs from his head and gave them to the brothers.
Poo and Taupau then built a shrine to Buddha.
Today, if you visit Rangoon in a country called Burma, or Myanmar (mee
[ahn]{.smallcaps} mah), you can see one of the most beautiful shrines to
Buddha in the world. It is the Shwe Dagon Pagoda. The top looks like a
giant golden bell. Buddhists say that it contains the eight precious
hairs of Buddha, who lived more than two thousand years ago.
These are some of the many statues of Buddha inside the golden shrine
at Rangoon, Burma.
