AN OCEAN OF SAND
You’d never expect to find skeletons of fish in the Sahara desert in
Africa. But scientists have found them there.
Long ago, the Sahara desert may have been an ocean of water. If that is
true, the fish bones were left behind when the water dried up. But,
before the water dried up, something else may have happened. A huge
garden with rivers and fields of grass may have grown where the desert
is now. Drawings found on the walls of caves in the desert show animals
that couldn’t have lived in a desert.
After a long time, the rivers dried up. So did the grass. And what may
have been first an ocean, and then a garden, became the biggest desert
in the world.
Prehistoric men carved the drawings on this rock in the Sahara desert.
