A SNOWLAND CALLED GREENLAND
When the Norseman, Eric the Red, discovered a large island in the
Atlantic Ocean, he thought if he gave it a good name people would want
to move there. So he named the island Greenland.
Greenland isn’t really a green land at all. It’s the largest island in
the world, but the only part of the island that’s green is the
coastline. The rest of the island is covered with ice and snow.
Not many people live in Greenland. Some work as fishermen, some work as
farmers, and some work as miners. Others work at weather stations and at
an important radar base.
Greenlandic children must dress warmly even in July.
