A GIANT OF A BUILDING
It reaches skyward like a mighty giant. It has 110 stories and is 1,454
feet (443 meters) high. This giant of a building is Sears Tower, in
Chicago, Illinois. It is the tallest building in the world.
Just to plan Sears Tower took about three years. Then it took four years
and millions of dollars to build. The building looks like nine
towers—of different heights—all clustered together.
To handle the crowds of workers and visitors, Sears Tower has seven
lobbies and more than a hundred elevators. Four of the lobbies are so
high up they’re called sky-lobbies. These skylobbies are served by
double-deck elevators—two elevators built one on top of the other.
Each elevator has room for 25 people. When these double-deck elevators
stop, the top elevator is at one floor and the bottom elevator is at the
floor below. This happens in the sky-lobbies on the 33rd and 34th floors
and the 66th and 67th floors.
You can ride in one of two elevators that zoom up to the Skydeck on the
103rd floor. The trip takes less than a minute. From the observation
deck, you can get a giant’s eyeview of Chicago and the surrounding area.
