A GIANT AND HIS OX

A GIANT AND HIS OX

Many years ago, lumberjacks loved to sit around blazing campfires and
tell whoppers, or tall tales. Their favorite tales were stories about
the superlumberjack, Paul Bunyan, and his great blue ox, Babe.

There are many different tales about Paul Bunyan and Babe. According to
one story, Paul was so big and strong, he could cut down hundreds of
trees with just one swing of his mighty ax. And in another tale, it is
said that Babe’s horns were so wide apart it took a crow forty days and
forty nights to fly from the tip of one horn to the tip of the other
horn.

In the early 1900’s, so much lumber was cut around Bemidji, Minnesota,
that Paul Bunyan might have done the job. Now, only one of fourteen
sawmills remains, but on the shores of Lake Bemidji, you can see huge
statues of Paul and Babe.
