Two

Two

Two is the first even number—a number that can be broken apart and
made into two smaller numbers that are exactly the same. Break two apart
and you get a one and a one.

Long ago, both the Chinese and the Greeks thought of even numbers—two,
four, six, and so on—as “girl” numbers. The odd numbers were “boy”
numbers.

The ancient Greeks felt that the number two was like someone who
couldn’t make up his mind about something. We still think of two this
way. When people say they are “of two minds” about something, they mean
they can’t decide between two choices.

In the folklore of many lands, the number two stands for opposite
things—good and evil, life and death, or light and darkness. Two is
said to have the color orange and to belong to the star group called
Taurus, the Bull.
