Six

Six

Long ago, the Greeks discovered something very odd about six. It can
be divided evenly by three numbers that are less than itself—one,
two, and three. And, these three numbers add up to six! Because of
this, the Greeks described six as a “perfect” number.

The Greeks thought of six as having two shapes. One shape was a
triangle, because six dots can be arranged in the shape of a triangle.
And they thought of six as a shape with six sides and six corners.
Such a shape is called a hexagon, which means “six corners.”

The Greeks thought six was the number that stood for life and for good
luck. They also said that six stood for the number of the parts of the
human body—two arms, two legs, the head, and the trunk, or body.

The color of six is said to be blue. And some people think of the
number six as belonging to the star group called Virgo, the Virgin.
