Pie puzzles
Fractions are foolers. For this reason, they make good puzzles.
Here’s a puzzle about different fractions of apple, cherry, and
blueberry pie.
Would you rather have the one piece of apple, the three pieces of
cherry, or the two pieces of blueberry pie? You’d get more if you took
the one piece of apple? Let’s see.
Cut a cherry pie into six equal pieces.
Each piece is one-sixth (\|) of the pie. Take three of the sixths (f),
put them together,
and you have half (\|) a pie. So, the fraction f is the same as the
fraction
Cut a blueberry pie into four equal pieces.
Each piece is one-fourth Q) of the pie. Take two of the fourths (\|),
put them together,
and you have half (\^-) a pie. So, the fractions and i are all the
same amount of pie!
