Five

Five

Think of the number five as five dots that you can arrange in a flat
shape that has five sides and five corners, or angles. A shape of this
kind is called a pentagon, a name that means “five corners.” And that’s
the way the ancient Greeks thought of five—as having the shape of a
pentagon.

To the Greeks, five stood for marriage. For them, five was the first
number made of both an odd, or “boy” number, three, and an even, or
“girl” number, two. They didn’t think of three as being made of an odd
one and an even two, as we do. For them, one wasn’t an odd number.

Five was also thought of as a rather magical number because we have five
senses—sight, hearing, smell, touch, and taste.

The color of five is said to be blue. And five is also said to belong to
the star group called Leo, the Lion.
