Stitched belt

Stitched belt

Materials

■ cloth scraps

■ felt or heavy cotton,

2 inches (5 cm) wide and long enough to go around your waist

■ embroidery thread

■ felt-tip pen

■ needle (tapestry, darner, or crewel)

■ scissors

■ straight pins

■ yarn

  1. Plan the design for your belt on a piece of plain paper. Now draw
the shapes in your design on pieces of cloth. Cut out these cloth
    shapes.

  2. Pin the cloth shapes to the belt. Using embroidery thread, stitch
the shapes to the belt with the overcast stitch (see overcast
    stitch,
page 156). Finish off your sewing (see finish off,
    page 155).

  3. Draw other shapes on the belt with a felt-tip pen. Outline or fill
in these shapes with the chain stitch (see chain stitch,
page 157) and the satin stitch (see satin stitch, page 157).
    Finish off your stitches.

  4. To make ties for the belt, cut three pieces of yarn 12 inches
(30 cm) long. Now cut these three pieces in half.

  5. Place three of the pieces of yarn together so that the ends meet.
Tie a knot at both ends. Now stitch a knotted end of the yarn to one
end of the belt. Stitch above and below the knot. Finish off your
stitches. Repeat step 5 for the other tie.
