Sea shells grow in many different sizes, shapes, and colors. You can
find them along the beach, or buy them. Your shells may not be just like
the ones shown on the next two pages, but you can invent sculptures of
your own with other kinds of shells.
Here are some general directions for turning a collection of sea shells
into amusing pets.
Clean and dry your shells (see clean and dry sea shells, page
136).Study your shells. Try to imagine them as parts of animals or birds.
For example, small flat shells make good feet or ears. Round or
cone-shaped shells can become bodies or heads. Large, flat shells
are good bases for other shells.
3 Glue the shells together, shell by shell (see stone or shell
sculptures, page 136).
4 Decorate your shell sculpture with tempera paint (see tempera
paint, page 66). This is an especially good way to give your pets
noses, mouths, and eyes. Or, paint eyes on tiny white buttons and glue
them to the sculpture. To give your finished shell sculpture a shiny
look, coat it with varnish.
