Seed mosaic
Materials
A mosaic is a picture made with tiny bits of glass, stone, or other
material. The Greeks and Romans made pictures like this to decorate
their floors and walls. You can make
cardboard (heavy)
glue (white)
pencil or felt-tip pen
paintbrush
seeds (see page 134)
a mosaic with seeds.
■ spoon
■ varnish
Plan a simple picture that has large areas of color. Keep in mind
the colors of your seeds. Draw your picture on a piece of heavy
cardboard.Glue seeds to the entire design and background. Try not to leave any
space between the seeds.
Use a brush, or your finger, to spread glue over a small part of your
design. Firmly place the larger seeds on the glue. For smaller seeds,
such as poppy seeds, fill a spoon with the seeds and carefully sprinkle
them onto the glue. Then spread glue and seeds on another small part of
the design. Let dry.
- When you are finished gluing seeds, brush varnish on the mosaic.
This will protect the seeds and will bring out their color.
You can make mosaics from other materials, too. You might want to try
colored eggshells or fish-tank gravel. Or, combine seeds with feathers,
flowers, and leaves.
