People projects
Materials
■ clay (hardening, modeling, chemical, or kitchen)
■ toothpick or other pointed tool
Read Clay (pages 108-110) before you decide what kind of clay you
want to use for this project.
1 For the body, roll a clay lump into a ball (see ball, page
110). Stretch it so it is longer than it is wide.
2 For the head, roll another lump of clay into a ball. Stick the
head to the body. Smooth the two parts together. To form the neck,
gently squeeze the clay where the head joins the body.
3 For the hips, shape a lump of clay to look like a rounded
triangle.
Stick and smooth the hips to the body.
4 For legs and arms, roll four lumps of clay into coils (see
coil, page 110).
For feet, stick and smooth two little triangles to the legs. Stick and
smooth the legs to the hips.
For hands, stick and smooth two little balls of clay to the arms. Stick
and smooth the arms to the body.
5 Give your model eyes, ears, a nose and a mouth, and some hair and
clothes. Draw these with a toothpick or make them by adding little
pieces of clay. Let dry (see dry, page 111).
It’s even more fun to make clay people who are doing things. Can you
model clay people catching a ball, taking a nap. petting a cat, driving
a car, or riding a horse?
Can you model sad people, shy people, happy people?
Can you model what you want to be when you grow up?
