Old-time skate scooter

Old-time skate scooter

Materials

  • common nails (4d and 8d or larger)

  • crosscut saw

  • flat, 4-inch L brackets and screws

  • hammer

  • hand drill with twist drill bit

  • lumber (6-foot 2 x 4 or two 3-foot 2 x 4’s; 1×1; and scrap wood)

  • pencil

  • ruler

1 Measure the distance from the floor to your waist. Saw two pieces of
2 x 4 to this length (see sawing, page 202). Sand the wood (see sanding,
page 203).

  • old roller skate (adjustable)

  • screwdriver

  • screws (two)

  • vise

  • Use one old roller skate for the scooter’s wheels. Remove the
ankle strap and the toe holders. Then unscrew the middle screw and
    take the skate apart.

  • Nail the skate wheels near the ends of one of the 2×4 pieces. Place
the nails through the holes in the skate or next to the skate.
Hammer 8d or larger common nails halfway into the 2×4 (see driving
    nails,
page 200). Then hammer the nails over, as shown.

  • Put the parts of the scooter together, as shown. Screw flat L
brackets on each side of the scooter (see driving screws, page
    201).

Use two pieces of scrap lumber about 10 inches (25 cm) long, 2 inches (5
cm) wide, and 7 inch (7 mm) thick for braces. Cut the ends of the braces
on a slant. Sand the braces. Then nail them to the scooter, as shown.

  1. Use a 14-inch (35-cm) length of

1 x 1 for the handle. Make a mark

6 inches from each end. Put the handle in a vise and drill holes through
it at the marks (see drilling, page 201). Sand the handle smooth

  1. Screw the handle to the scooter. Drive the screws through the handle
until you can see the tips of the screws on the other side. Hold the
scooter steady with your foot, as shown. Place the handle on the
    scooter and tighten the screws.

  2. Put a finish on your scooter (see finishing, page 203). Be
careful not to paint or varnish the wheels.
