Let’s Dress Up

Costume Box: Look at all the people you can be! All you have to do is
ask your mom and dad if they have any old clothes, jewelry, and makeup
you can have. Keep these things in a special costume box and you’ll be
all ready to play “dress up” on a rainy day. Pretty Lady: Dress up in
your mother’s old clothes and makeup. Spy: Wear a trench coat and your
father s old hat. Carry a small box painted to look like a two-way
radio. Gypsy Fortuneteller: Wear a fancy blouse, lots of petticoats, a
skirt, a blanket, and a kerchief Add jewelry. Carry a deck of cards to
tell fortunes. Johnny Appleseed: Dress in raggedy old clothes and an old
hat. Carry a shoulder purse to hold the appleseeds. Hobo: Wear raggedy
old clothes and

carry your things in a kerchief tied to a stick. For makeup, ask a
grown-up to help you burn the end of a cork. Rub the burnt cork on your
face. Pirate: Dress in raggedy old clothes. Wear an earring, paper
moustache, and an eyepatch. Tie a kerchief on your head and carry a
cardboard sword. Wear burnt cork makeup (see Hobo). Clown: Wear your
father’s old pajamas, work gloves, and a worn-out pair of shoes. To make
a wig, cut off the foot of an old sock. Tie one end of the tube with
string and turn it inside out. Sew yarn all over the tube. Cover your
face with cold cream and pat on flour. Outline and color your mouth,
eyes, nose, and cheeks with lipstick. With an eyebrow pencil, draw heavy
eyebrows and dark lines under your eyes.

Scary Skeleton: Wear a leotard, tights, and gloves. Stick on strips of
white reflector tape as bones. For the hat, cut off the foot of an old
sock. Tie one end of the tube with string and turn it inside out. For
makeup, use burnt cork (see Hobo, page 246), cover the rest of your face
with cold cream and pat on fJour. Ghoulish Ghost: Wear a leotard,
tights, gloves, and sheet. See Scary Skeleton for makeup. Wicked Witch:
Make a basic costume with long, wide sleeves (see page 256). Cut off the
feet of old nylon stockings. Starting at the bottom of the costume, sew
on the stockings. Wear a brimmed hat with a cone crown (see page 258).
Draw wrinkle lines with an eyebrow pencil. Angel: Make a long basic
costume with wide sleeves (see page 256). Sew on tinsel garland

with the overcast stitch (see page 156). Make cardboard wings and cover
them with foil. Tie them on with string and garland. For the halo, use 4
feet (1.2 cm) of wire covered with foil. Devil: Wear red tights.
Make a tunic with long sleeves (see page 256). For the hood, make a sack
costume with pointed horns (see page 257). Cut out a face hole. Stuff
the horns with cotton. For the tail, make a yarn braid (see page 178).
Push wire through it. Rub burnt cork on your face (see Hobo, page 246).
Carry a cardboard pitchfork. Shepherd: Make a long basic costume
with wide sleeves (see page 256). For the hat, use a piece of cloth and
a felt headband. Carry a blanket over your shoulder and a cardboard
shepherd’s crook in your hand.

Beagle: Make a sack costume (see page 257). Sew on felt ears with
the backstitch (see page 156). Paint the spots and face with tempera
paint. For the tail, make a yarn braid (see page 181). Owl: Make a
sack costume (see page 257). Make felt feathers, each about 6 inches (15
cm) long and 4 inches (10 cm) wide. Paint the lines with tempera paint.
Starting at the hem, sew on rows of feathers with the running stitch
(see page 155). Do not sew feathers around the eyeholes. Sew on a felt
beak and eyes with the overcast stitch (see page 156). Cut out eyeholes.
Penguin: Make a black felt sack costume (see page 257). Glue on or
paint the wings, feet, and breast. Sew on a felt beak and eyes with the
overcast stitch (see page 156). Cut out eyeholes. Lamb: Make a white
terry cloth sack costume (see page 257). Draw a nose and mouth, or glue
on ones made of felt. Sew on felt ears and a tail of braided yarn (see
Beagle). Butterfly: Wear a leotard and tights. Make a pair of
cardboard wings. Color or paint both sides. Glue and tape cloth shoulder
straps and a waistband to the front of the wings. For the antennae, cut
holes in a felt headband, two holes for each antenna. Push pipe cleaners
through the holes and glue in place. Ladybug: Wear a leotard and
tights. Cut out two pieces of red felt in the shape of rounded squares.
Sew the two pieces together using the backstitch (see page 156), but
leave an opening. Stuff with rags or crumpled newspaper and stitch the
opening. Glue on felt spots and a stripe. From black cloth, cut out two
shoulder straps and a waistband. Use the backstitch to sew these on.
Wear antennae (see Butterfly).

Robin Hood: Wear a leotard and tights. Make a felt tunic with short
sleeves and a separate collar (see page 256). Wear a soft cap with a
feather (see page 258). Maid Marian: Make a long basic costume with
wide, pointed sleeves and a front neck slit (see page 256). Tie a sash
around your waist. Wear a cone crown with a scarf tucked into the end
(see page 259). Friar Tuck: Make a long basic costume with wide sleeves
(see page 256). Wear a rope belt. For the collar, make a sack costume
that is just big enough for your head (see page 257). Cut out a face
hole and pull it over your head. Pilgrim Boy: Wear jeans and white knee
socks. Make a tunic with long sleeves and a front opening (see page
256). Sew snaps along the opening. Paint or sew on buttons. Make a
square collar and cuffs of felt (see page 257). For the hat, make a
brimmed hat with a cone crown (see page 258). Measure up 9 inches (23
cm) from the brim and draw a line. Cut on this line (see inside cuts,
page 37). Finish like a flat crown (see page 259). Piigrim Girl: Make a
long basic costume with long, narrow sleeves (see page 256). Add a
square collar and cuffs of felt (see page 257). For the apron, use a
piece of cloth 24 inches (60 cm) wide and long enough to reach your
knees. Hem it on three sides. Gather it on the fourth side with the
running stitch (see page 155). Use the backstitch to sew the gathered
edge to a sash (see page 156). Wear a soft cap with the seam running
from ear to ear.

Clock: Wear a leotard, tights, and a sandwich board. To make the
sandwich board, cut out two large cardboard circles. Decorate the
circles to look like the face and back of a clock. Glue and tape felt
shoulder straps to the circles. Glue two strips of cardboard between the
circles, to cover each side of your body. Wear a stiff cap (see page
258). Robot: Wear dark jeans and a shirt, boots, and rubber gloves. Cut
out holes in a cardboard carton for your head and arms (see inside cuts,
page 37). Cut an eye slit in a smaller carton for your head. Glue on
different things to look like knobs and dials. Astronaut: Wear
long-sleeved pajamas, rubber gloves, and boots. Add strips of
silver-gray reflector tape. Glue on felt patches. For the helmet, cut a
strip of cardboard about 10 inches (25 cm) wide and 25 inches (63 cm)
long. Cut a face hole in the center of the strip. Fasten the

ends with staples and tape. For the top, make a stiff cap (see page
258). Cover with aluminum foil. For the life pack, connect two cereal
boxes like a sandwich board (see Clock). Glue on round plastic bottles
and jar lids. Paint the costume silver-gray. Rocket: Make a sack
costume (see page 257). Glue on pieces of felt or paint the outline of a
rocket on the front and back of the sack. Wear a cone crown (see page
259). Hot Dog: Make a sack costume of red felt (see page 257). Glue
a piece of gold felt to the sack. Glue on felt relish. Carrot: Make
a sack costume of orange felt (see page 257). Paint the lines with
tempera paint. Glue green felt leaves to the top. Pizza: Wear a
leotard and tights. Decorate a sandwich board to look like a pizza (see
Clock). Bacon and Eggs: Wear a leotard and tights. Decorate a
sandwich board to look like bacon and eggs (see Clock).
