Lanyard lacings
1 Tie a piece of string to the snap end of your snap hook. Now tie
the string to a doorknob or chair. This will make it easier for you to
braid your lanyard.
Materials
- flat plastic lacing
(two colors, 3 yards
[2.7 m] of each color)
snap hook
scissors
2 Push the laces through the snap hook and fold them in half so you
have four strands. Arrange the strands as shown.

A lanyard is a braided cord or rope. You can buy the materials for this
project in a craft shop.
3 Fold strand D under C and B, and then over strand B, as shown. Now
fold strand A under B and D, and then over strand D, as shown. Keep the
lacing flat as you braid.
Continue braiding this way. Fold the right-hand outside strand under two
strands and back over one. Then fold the left-hand outside strand under
two strands and back over one. Always work with the highest outside
strand.
Braid until the cord is long enough to go around your neck and hang down
your chest, as shown.
- When the cord is the length you want, place the hook end of the cord
between the lacings, as shown.
Continue to braid around the cord. Do not count the cord as a lace. Make
this part of the braid about 1 inch (2.5 cm) long and loose enough for
the hook-end cord to slide up and down through the braiding.
- When you are finished braiding, tie each pair of opposite-color
laces once. Cut off the ends, leaving tails about 1 inch (2.5 cm)
long.
You can use your lanyard to hold a whistle, a pendant, or a key. You can
make a long lanyard and use it as a belt or a leash for your pet. A
short lanyard makes a sturdy key chain.
