Knots ‘n pots macrame
Read knotting (page 180) before you begin this project.
Materials
corrugated cardboard or Styrofoam
curtain ring (optional)
jute
pins or thumbtacks
scissors
tin can, jar, or flowerpot
Cut six pieces of cord. For this project, each cord should be about
five times as long as the distance you want your pot to hang down.
(The rule that cords should measure eight times the finished length
does not apply here because there are only a few knots.)Fold the cords in half so you have twelve strands. Tie the folded
cords together in a grouped overhand knot, or hitch them to a
curtain ring with lark’s head knots (see lark’s head or
grouped overhand knots, page 180).Divide the cords into three groups of four cords each.
Pin one group of cords to a knotting board (see knotting board,
page 180).
Tie two square knots (see square knot, page 180) about inch (13 mm)
below the beginning knots. Leave the knots loose enough so you can see
the design. Tie two knots like this for each group of cords.
Take two cords from each group to make three new groups of four
cords each. Leave a 2-inch (5-cm) space. Tie two square knots in
each new group. Next, tie three tight square knots with loops, as
shown. Put pins in the board to hold the loops evenly. Then tie one
square knot.Take two cords from each group to make three new groups of four.
Leave a 2-inch (5-cm) space. Tie three square knots in each new
group. Leave a 2-inch (5-cm) space. Tie three more square knots.Tie all the cords together in a grouped overhand knot near the ends.
Place a tin can, jar, or flowerpot filled with flowers or plants in
your macrame hanger. Hang the pot from a hook, and enjoy your little
garden hanging in the air.
You can make macrame projects to hang up your toys and macrame projects
to wear. By making the knots closer together, you can make a belt.
