Brush painting

Brush painting

Materials

  • containers (four)

  • newspaper (want-ad section)

  • paintbrushes (large)

  • tempera paint

(blue, red, yellow)

  • water

Before you begin this project, cover your work area with layers of
newspaper. Cover yourself with an old shirt.

  1. Pour each paint color into a separate container. Mix a little water
with each color. The paint should be thin enough to flow easily from
the brush, but thick enough to cover the print on the paper.

Fill another container with water. Place the paints and water where you
can reach them easily.

  1. Spread out a large sheet of newspaper from the want-ad section. The
close print in this section of the paper will give you an even
    background for your painting.

  2. Dip a paintbrush into the blue paint. Spread the paint in wide
strokes on the newspaper. Now try making narrow lines of color with
the tip of the brush. Dab the brush on the paper. Swish it around.
See how many different ways you can use the brush.

  3. Clean your brush in water, or get a clean one. This time, dip the
brush into the yellow paint. Brush the paint over the paper. Spread
some of the yellow paint on top of the blue paint and watch what
    happens.

  4. Now place a clean sheet of newspaper on your work area. Try mixing
other colors together. Remember the colors you like and how you made
them. Be sure to clean your brush in water each time you use a new
    color.
