Basic costume

Materials

  • bathrobe

  • cloth or old sheet

  • felt-tip pen

  • needle

  • newspaper

  • scissors

  • seam binding (double-fold)

  • straight pins

  • thread

  • Tape several sheets of newspaper together. Lay your bathrobe on
the paper. Trace around the robe, adding 1 inch (2.5 cm) for the
    seams.

Look at the pictures to see how you can change the basic pattern to
make the costume you want.

  1. Pin the pattern to a piece of doubled cloth. Cut out the
    costume.

  2. Make a neck opening so you can slip the costume over your head.
Cut an 8-inch (20-cm) slit from the neck down the back of the
    costume.

  3. Pin the pieces of cloth together. Sew the shoulder seams, sleeve
seams, and side seams (see backstitch, page 156). Make 1-inch
    (2.5 cm) seams.

  4. Hem the sleeves and the bottom (see hemming stitch, page 156).

Use the backstitch to sew double-fold seam binding around the neck
slit and neck. Leave enough seam binding at each end of the neck to make
ties. If the costume is sleeveless, sew seam binding around the
armholes.

Wear the neck slit in the front or in the back. Turn the flaps under
or back, or tie the tie, depending on the costume you are making.

Cuffs

To make cuffs, measure the width at the bottom of the sleeve. Draw a
line (A) this long on a piece of doubled felt. Draw another line (B) 5
inches (12.5 cm) above the first line. Connect the two lines. Draw
another cuff. Cut out the cuffs and sew them to the sleeves (see
backstitch, page 156).

Sack costume

I Fold an old sheet in half and lie down on it. Have someone draw a
line around you. Leave an extra 12 inches (30 cm) all around. The shape
should look like the one in the picture.

  1. Pin around the shape inside the lines. Cut out the shape.

  2. Stitch around the shape, leaving an opening on each side for your
    hands (see backstitch, page 156).

  3. Cut out eyeholes. Put on the sack and mark the eyeholes with a
felt-tip pen. Then take off the sack and cut out the eyeholes.

  4. Turn the sack so the seams are inside. Hem the sack (see hemming
    stitch
    ).
