Putting electricity to work

Putting electricity to work

It may look a bit like a dragon, and it may

roar like one—but it’s really only a vacuum cleaner. And the thing
that makes it gobble

up dirt from a rug is an electric fan!

When you turn on the vacuum cleaner, you start the fan. The fan blows
air into the

vacuum cleaner bag. As the air moves into

the bag, it leaves an empty space inside the bottom of the vacuum
cleaner. An empty space, where there is little air, is called a
vacuum. This is what gives the vacuum cleaner its name.

Full of Energy 55

The air outside the vacuum cleaner tries to push into the empty space.
But there is only one place where the outside air can get in—
through the part that is sweeping the rug. Inside this part of the
vacuum cleaner there is a spinning brush. The brush helps to loosen
the dirt in the rug. And the rushing air sucks up the dirt and carries
it into the bag.

The vacuum cleaner bag is full of tiny holes, so the air easily pushes
out through the bag. But the dust doesn’t! It gets stuck

leaves your

inside. So the electric \”dragon” rug clean.
