Canada Day

July 1

Happy birthday, Canada!

Canada has a birthday on July 1. It’s Canada Day, a national holiday
that used to be called Dominion Day.

Canada once belonged to Great Britain. In time, parts of the country
joined together to form their own government. This new nation, which
remained loyal to Britain, was to be called the Dominion of Canada.

On July 1, 1867, the British government approved the plan. Canada became
an independent country with its own government. The new Dominion of
Canada had only four provinces. Now there are ten provinces and two
territories.

Canada no longer calls itself a Dominion. It is just plain Canada, which
is why Canadians now call July 1 Canada Day instead of Dominion Day.
