Every day’s a holiday
Every day of the year there is a holiday somewhere. Often, there are
many different holidays on the same day. If you wanted to, you could
celebrate all year long. Here, for example, are a few of the holidays
that come on the first seven days of March.
March 1 is a traditional spring holiday in the Engadine Valley in
Switzerland. On this day, young people in costumes ring bells and crack
whips to drive away the demons of winter.
It was on March 2, 1836, that Texas declared its independence from
Mexico. And Sam Houston, one of the people who led the Texans in their
fight for freedom, was born on this day in 1793. So, this is a double
holiday in Texas.
March 3 is a national holiday in Morocco, a country in North Africa.
Morocco is ruled by a king, and this day is celebrated as the
Anniversary of the Throne.
On March 4, 1791, Vermont became the fourteenth state of the United
States. So, the people of Vermont celebrate March 4 as Admission Day.
On March 5, Massachusetts remembers what has come to be called the
Boston Massacre. On this day in 1770, several colonists were killed in a
street fight with British soldiers. One of the people killed was Crispus
Attucks, who may have been a
runaway slave. His death is remembered in New Jersey, where this is
Crispus Attacks Day.
March 6 is Independence Day in the African country of Ghana. And on the
little Pacific island of Guam, nearly halfway around the world, March 6
is known as Magellan Day. It was on this day in 1521 that the Portuguese
explorer Ferdinand Magellan landed on the island.
March 7 is the birthday of Luther Burbank. This great naturalist, who
was born in 1849, developed many new trees and flowers. In California,
where he lived for many years, his birthday is celebrated as
Conservation, Bird, and Arbor Day.
