Adenoids
Adenoids are clusters of lymphatic tissue located high up in the
back part of the throat, directly behind the nasal cavity. Healthy
adenoids may help prevent or overcome infection.
If the adenoids swell (usually because of an infection), they may block
the passage from the nose and force mouth breathing. Or they may block
the opening to the Eustachian tube (the passage leading to each middle
ear). This may cause ear infections or impair hearing.
Location of the adenoids
The adenoids are located in the back of the throat, behind the nasal
cavity. They help fight infection.
The adenoids may have to be removed surgically if they obstruct nasal
breathing, obstruct the Eustachian tube, cause recurring nasal or ear
infections, or impair hearing. [c.f.f.]
