THE …HOW AND WHY LIBRARY
VOLUME 2
Time to Read is a collection of 21 stories and 129 poems and riddle
rhymes selected to meet the needs and interests of two groups of
children: young listeners and young readers.
A Note to Parents
For the preschooler, here are wonderful read-to picture books that you
as a parent will enjoy as much as your listener. Imagine the smiles when
your youngster discovers what baby mouse really wanted in Maria
Polushkin’s warm and loving tale, Mother, Mother, I Want Another. And
don’t forget to talk with your child about what is going on in Diane
Dawson’s lively and humorous illustrations.
Is your little one reluctant to take a bath? Then try reading about the
antics of Harry in Gene Zion’s Harry the Dirty Dog. Or, if you want to
talk to your child about friendship, read the two stories about those
good friends, Frog and Toad.
And don’t overlook poems your youngster might enjoy, such as “My Nose,”
“Guess,” “How to Tell a Tiger,” “Table Manners,” “Rules,” “The Eensy,
Weensy Spider,” and “Bedtime Stories.”
A Note to Young Readers
Time to Read gives you a chance to read some old favorites on your
own—and to try out some new stories and poems, too. As you will
discover, this book starts with stories that beginning readers will find
easy to read and moves along to stories that are for more advanced
readers.
Along the way, you will meet some wonderful storybook friends—Amelia
Bedelia, Paddington Bear, Pippi Longstocking, and others. You will find
out that some of their problems are much like your problems. Have you
ever had a bad day such as Sam did in I Should Have Stayed in Bed? Or
perhaps you have a younger brother or sister who is a pest like Fudge in
“The Family Dog.” And if you think you are smart, try matching wits with
Encyclopedia Brown. By the way, don’t skip the note at the end of each
story. It will lead you to other stories you can find in the library.
Try the poems, too. For real fun, the humorous ones are hard to beat.
And the serious ones will help you to see things in a different way.
So, turn the page—it’s Time to Read!
