Learning about people’s problems

Immigrants—people who have moved from one country to another—often
have to learn to read, write, and speak another language. Here, a social
worker is teaching English to Asian immigrants.

Learning about people’s problems

Scientists called sociologists study how people live and work together.
They try to find out why there is sometimes trouble between two groups
of people living- near each other. They study what happens to people who
move to new places and change their ways of life.

Social workers are people who are trained to help individuals and
families work out their problems. They help people to get food,
clothing, and jobs. They help newcomers from other countries learn the
ways and language of their new land. And they work with people in
hospitals, schools, and prisons.

Psychologists are scientists who try to find out why people think and
act as they do. Why do we sometimes get angry or sad with no real
reason? Why are we afraid of some people or things?

All of these “people watchers” work in different ways to help us
understand ourselves and others, and to help us have better lives.
