Beads and bracelets
In the steamy forests of Brazil, the Indians wear hardly any
clothes—or no clothes at all. But they love to dress up. How do they
do it? They wear lots of jewelry.
But their jewelry isn’t the kind that’s made of gold, silver, and
jewels. These Indians use stones, bones, teeth, claws, and feathers.
They use the brightly colored feathers of the toucan bird as ear
ornaments. And they make necklaces from the claws of jaguars and other
animals.
The Navajo Indians of the Southwestern United States are famous for
their jewelry. Skilled craftsmen use silver and a blue-green jewel
called a turquoise to make beautiful necklaces, bracelets, and rings.
Everywhere in the world, people wear some kind of jewelry to make
themselves look more beautiful.
