Sometimes eyes need help

Sometimes eyes need help

I see a horse in a field. If I can’t see the horse clearly, my eyes need
help.

Eyeballs should be nearly round. People whose eyeballs are too long are
nearsighted. They look at the far-off horse, and they see only a blur. A
clear picture of the horse does not form at the back of their eyes.
Nearsighted people wear glasses to help them see things that are far
away.

People whose eyeballs are too short are farsighted. When they look at
something- close by, such as the words in this book, they see a blur.
Farsighted people wear glasses to help them see things that are nearby.

Some people wear contact lenses instead of glasses. Contact lenses are
made of clear plastic. They are so small that they float on the tears
that cover the eyes. The fronts of the eyes over the irises are rounded.
Contact lenses are also rounded. The lenses fit over the irises and stay
in place until the people who wear the contact lenses take them out of
their eyes.

My sister’s contact lenses are smaller than the tip of my thumb.

\| Inside and Outside of Me

If my eyeballs were too long, I’d be nearsighted. Then, a far-off
horse might look like this to me. My eyes would need help.

I’d wear the kind of glasses that helped my eyes see far-off things
clearly. Then, the horse that was far off would look like this to me.
