Muscles help me move

Muscles help me move

I can move because I have muscles. Muscles that help me move are
fastened to my bones and are elastic, like rubber bands. They can
stretch out and draw back together again.

Some muscles, like the big ones in my arms and legs, have strong cords
called tendons at their ends. The muscles are fastened to my bones by
these tendons.

Muscles work together in gi’oups. As some of them tighten and become
shorter, the other muscles in the group get longer. That’s what happens
when I bend my elbow or knee and straighten it again. If I had no
muscles, I wouldn’t be able to move or even stand.

My body has more than 600 major muscles. Besides those that help me
move, others help to keep my body working. These are not fastened to my
bones.

Muscles in my stomach and intestines mix and mash my food. Muscles in my
chest help me breathe. And my heart is a very special kind of
extra-strong muscle.

Muscles help me bend my arm or straighten it. The muscle in the front of
my arm is my biceps. The muscle in the back of my arm is my triceps. My
biceps and my triceps work together.
