I listen in special ways

I listen in special ways

In Australia, some children live so far from school they learn their
lessons by special radio.

Sometimes special instruments help me listen. There are instruments that
copy sounds on records or tapes, and I can listen to these sounds over
and over again. There are instruments that make sounds louder so that I
am able to hear them. And there are instruments that send sounds through
wires or through the air so that they reach me from faraway places.

Once I talked into the microphone on a tape recorder. Then I listened to
my voice talking back to me.

Once I put on the doctor’s stethoscope, and I listened to my own heart
beating.

On holidays I listen to my grandma talking to me on the telephone. Her
voice comes to me from far away.

I watched the astronauts on television. They were way up in space, but I
listened to them talk.

Almost every day at school, I listen to the principal speak on the
intercom.

Listening to sounds and voices that come to me through special
instruments helps me learn about the world in which I live.
