I grow
I am always growing. Growing is the easiest thing I do. I don’t have to
think about it. It just happens. I can stop running or walking or
climbing, but I can’t stop myself from growing.
How do I know I grow? I can’t feel it happening. I don’t seem to be much
taller today than I was last year. But the clothes I wore last year are
now too small for me, and so I know I have grown. And I know the growing
goes on and on.
What happens to me when I grow?
There are more than ten million million cells in my body. Each of those
cells keeps getting bigger and bigger, stretching, growing. After a
while each cell divides and becomes two cells. Those two cells get
bigger and bigger, stretching, growing. After a time the two cells
divide and become four cells. The four cells become eight cells. The
dividing of my cells goes on and on.
Each day my muscles are a tiny bit bigger than they were the day before.
There are more muscle cells in them. Each day my bones are a little
bigger. There are more bone cells in them.
I do not have to try to grow. I just grow. And I grow at my own special
speed because I am me.
