The first birds

The birds of today sing or whistle or screech. But the first birds may
have hissed like snakes! They were more like reptiles than like birds.
They were reptiles with wings and feathers.

The first birds we know about were as big as pigeons. They had little
claws on their wings and teeth in their mouths. They probably couldn’t
fly very well, but they could climb trees easily. Most scientists
believe that the first birds lived about 150 million years ago, at the
same time as some of the big dinosaurs.
