The family of nations
The biggest “family” in the world is the United Nations. It has more
than 150 members—almost every nation in the world.
Each nation sends people to represent it at United Nations headquarters
in New York City. These people meet for about three months each year.
They work together to keep peace in the world. They talk about how
nations should behave toward one another. They talk about rules to
protect the rights of everyone.
The Olympic Games is another world “family.” Every four years, athletes
from nations throughout the world compete in sports at the Olympic
Games.
Athletes from many nations take part in the Olympic Games every four
years.
Girl Scouts
Girls in scouting can meet Scouts from other nations around the world.
There are Boy Scouts in more than 110 nations. All Scouts have the same
beliefs and purposes. They are taught to love God, their country, and
other people. Every four years, Scouts from different countries meet at
a world jamboree.
Nearly 100 countries belong to the World Association of Girl Guides and
Girl Scouts. The girls, like the boys, learn ideals of character and
love of country. Girls from around the world can meet at “world houses”
in England, Mexico, Switzerland, and India.
In all these groups, people of different races, religions, and ways of
life work and play together. They learn to know and respect one another
in spite of their differences.
