Fish in armor

Fish in armor

According to most scientists, the fishes that swam in the seas 430
million years ago were covered with hard, bony armor. They had no jaws
like the fish of today. Their mouths were just holes in the bony shells
that covered their heads. They sucked food through the holes as they
swam slowly over the sea-bottom.

The armored fish weren’t the only animals in the water. There were
creatures with many legs, like insects. They were big and fast and they
ate other animals. The armored fish were smaller and slower. They needed
their armor for protection.
