I eat food
I use my tongue and teeth when I eat. These help me grind up and mix my
food.
I use muscles, too, when I eat. I use muscles in my jaws, throat,
esophagus, stomach, and intestines.
Special organs and glands in my body make liquids that help me digest
food.
Glands in my mouth make saliva, which I mix with food. Glands in my
stomach and small intestine add other liquids. The most important part
of digestion happens in my small intestine.
My pancreas sends liquid to my small intestine. So does my liver. My
liver lies just under my diaphragm.
In the pictures on the next page, some things can be seen in the boy’s
body which are hidden in the girl’s body. The boy and girl have the same
organs for digesting food. But the boy’s stomach, liver, and intestines
have been made smaller in the picture so that the other organs can be
seen.
