Electric music
Some new kinds of musical instruments have no strings, no tubes, and
nothing to tap or hammer on. These instruments use an electric current
to make special sounds.
An electric current makes tiny pushes in a wire—pushes that can be
speeded up or slowed down. So if the current is sent to a speaker, much
like a radio speaker, it can make the speaker parts vibrate faster or
slower. That makes the speaker give off higher or lower sounds.
Mixing fast and slow electric pushes in certain ways can make the
speaker give off sounds very much like the musical instruments you know.
Or it can make the speaker vibrate in strange ways and create sounds
that have never been made before. So the electric music you hear may
sound like a single flute, a room full of bells, or even a giant
duck—or all of them together!
