“Something” for everyone

“Something” for everyone

What’s in the package? You won’t know for

sure until you open it—but it’s fun to guess.

You can tell about how big the present inside

the wrapping paper is. And you can tell about

how heavy it is when you lift the package.

The package and the present inside it are

made up of something—something that has weight and takes up space.
That \”something” is called matter [(mat]{.smallcaps} uhr).

Anything that has weight and takes up space is matter—so you are
matter, too. And so is a rock, a dandelion, a rabbit, or a puddle of
water. There is matter in everything around you.

Even the air you breathe is matter. You don’t really feel how much air
weighs, because most things are heavier than air. But air does have
weight. And it takes up space. You can feel it take up space when you
breathe in. And you can see it take up space when you blow up a
balloon.
