Make an alligator long-arm

Make an alligator long-arm

Levers make it easier to lift big and heavy things. They can also help
you pick up things you can’t quite reach. This alligator long-arm uses
pairs of levers to make other levers move.

Use the ruler to measure six strips of cardboard. Each strip should be
about 6V2 inches (16.5 centimeters) long and % inch (2 cm) wide. Leave a
\”tooth” on two of the strips, as shown. Cut out the strips.

Use a pencil to punch holes in the middle of the strips. Fasten pairs of
strips together to make three X shapes—two plain shapes and

one with teeth. Line up the X shapes as shown and punch the remaining
holes. Fasten the shapes together.

Make an alligator head out of construction paper. The head should be
almost as long as one of the strips. Then stretch out the long- arm
until the teeth on the X touch. Glue the head to the top of the X with
teeth, leaving just enough space for the teeth to show. Glue white paper
on the teeth to give your alligator a bright smile.

Your alligator long-arm works like a pair of scissors. When you close
your end, the end with teeth closes, too. You and your friends can take
turns using the long-arm to pick up small cardboard fish or \”pirate
treasure.” See who can make the biggest catch!
