What will we eat?
A party means refreshments! What you eat at the party depends on the
party time (see page 299). You may serve a meal, or you may serve only
snacks. Whatever you plan, you can turn ordinary foods into specialties
that will fit in with your party theme.
Sweets
Start off your refreshments with a sweet. Decorate each place setting
with a tiny party basket filled with nuts and candies. Or, build animals
and people with marshmallows, gumdrops, and toothpicks.
Ice Cream and Cake
A party isn\’t a party without ice cream and cake. Here are some special
ways you can serve them.
Circus Clown Put a scoop of ice cream in an ice-cream cone. Turn the
cone upside down on a plate. Use chocolate chips or gumdrops to make the
face on the ice cream.
Flowerpot Fill a paper cup with ice cream. Stick in a lollipop for a
flower.
Frosty the Snowman Stack two scoops of vanilla ice cream on a plate.
Sprinkle on coconut. Add a gumdrop hat and chocolate-chip eyes, nose,
and mouth.
Jack-o’-Lantern Put a scoop of orange sherbet on a plate. Stick a
candle in the top and add chocolate chips or gumdrops for the eyes,
nose, and mouth.
Make-Your-Own-Sundaes Older boys and girls enjoy making their own
sundaes. All you have to do is put the plates and ingredients on a side
table.
Circus Cupcake Stand an animal cracker on top of an iced cupcake.
Stick three straws into the cupcake and use icing to glue a cookie on
top of the straws.
Spring Basket Cupcakes Push a pipe cleaner into a cupcake to make a
handle. Then add gumdrop flowers.
Fairy-Tale Cookie Castle Make a cardboard house for a base. Then
spread cake icing over the house and stick cookies into the icing (see
picture on page 302). Pull off the cookies and eat them with the ice
cream.
Drinks
You can give your party drinks a festive air, too. Serve punch in a
color that goes with the party theme. For example, serve orangeade at a
Halloween party and strawberry soda pop at a Valentine’s party. Make
fancy ice cubes by freezing some of your punch. Or, push a cherry or
strawberry into each cube before you freeze it. Slip a party theme
cutout on each straw.
Meals
If you’re serving a meal, you can make party-perfect sandwiches in all
kinds of special shapes. Use cookie cutters to cut the bread into
different shapes. Or, you might want to serve pizzas or hamburgers from
the local drive-in. Of course, hot dogs are terrific at any mealtime
party.
But remember, most boys and girls don’t like to eat strange foods. So
try to serve foods all the children will like. Save your more unusual
favorites for another day.
