Fringed pillow

Fringed pillow

Materials

■ burlap or canvas,

12 inches (30 cm) wide and 24 inches (60 cm) long

  • felt, 8 inches (20 cm) square

  • felt-tip pen

  • needle (tapestry, darner, or crewel)

  • scissors

  • straight pins

  • stuffing (old, cut-up socks, stockings, or rags)

  • yarn

1 Fold the burlap in half so that the short edges meet evenly. Cut
the burlap in half along the fold line to make two squares.

2 Draw a large circle on the felt. Cut out the circle and draw a
face on it with a felt-tip pen.

Use the chain stitch (see chain stitch, page 157) to outline the
eyes, nose, and mouth. Finish off your sewing (see finish off, page
155).

3 Now pin the face to the center of one of the burlap squares.
Stitch the edges to the burlap with the overcast stitch (see overcast
stitch,
page 156). Be sure to finish off your sewing.

4 Pin the burlap squares together on all four sides. Place the pins
about 1 inch (2 cm) from the edges. Use the backstitch (see
backstitch, page 156) to sew three of the sides together. Stitch
just below the pins. Finish off your sewing.

  1. Take out the pins and push stuffing into the pillow through the open
side. Make the pillow nice and fat. Now stitch the open side closed
with the backstitch. Finish off your sewing.

  1. To fringe the pillow, pull five or six threads out of each edge of
the burlap. Do not pull the threads too close to the stitches or the
    stuffing may come out.

Use your pillow to decorate your bed or give it to a friend as a gift.
